Shattered economy sets glass prices soaring!

Pilkington, once a pioneer in the world of glassmaking, supplying more than a third of glass used in UK buildings, have been forced to raise their prices by 134% in the space of a year. Pilkington have reported a loss of £4.6 million in comparison with last year's profit of £43 million.

Due to the economic recession, glass manufacturing and supplies have become uneconomical and unsustainable. This recent price raise has angered customers coming at a time when the house building and construction market is on its knees, following the worst sales slump in decades. One Pilkington client said "It's ridiculous. What am i supposed to tell my customers?"

One overlooked consequence of this price inflation is the replacement market, resulting from vandalism and burglary. So it is now more important than ever to look into glass protection, as in recent years there has been a rise in crime, with burglaries up by 1 percent to 284,000, the first increase in six years. These factors indicate that it is no longer cost effective to replace damaged or broken glass, making it essential to invest in glass protection. In particular specialist glass such as laminated and tinted products can be both expensive and time consuming to replace which can result in a building being unprotected for long periods of time, making it both vulnerable and susceptible to vandalism.

The Security Shield™ range of products effectively protects glass and glazing without compromising building aesthetics or cutting down the ingress of natural light.

Security Shield Intruder - perforated security grille tested to LPS 1175

Security Shield Vandal - budget grilles for low cost applications
